Robert S. Hughes, 87, passed away September 29, 2017.
The magic happened in Pops workshop. Screws and bolts and dovetail joints. He used his sanding blocks with care from coarse to super fine. While layers of varnish were applied with care to create a mirror shine. Cradles, keyboard and music stands from recycled mop handles. Folded plastic grocery bags, bird carvings, as well as Heathkit TV's radios and radio controlled airplanes. Pops hair would tell a story as there was not much on top. Only to bring attention to Pops true blue eyes. His pouty grin and dry humor made us all smile - especially his "girl".
He called his granddaughter "sugar".
His great granddaughter holds his blue eyes. His daughter in law knows he is the "cause" of all this as he is surrounded by a family born into love. Pop always listened with care as our life stories were told from lookouts, phone booths and new homes along the way. He was always a good sport to dress as mom asked but the pouty face was part of the plan. His everyday attire of one pocket plaid shirts and tan khakis is occasionally reflected in his grandson’s attire. He sang along with Eddy Arnold and waltzed to Frank Sinatra. He "cut the rug" a few times with the jitterbug as it was the only time he broke from his "slow and steady" way of life. His "fast " happened at the race track as part of pit crew or as a spectator on Saturday afternoon TV. Pop loved his desserts especially Mom's homemade Cortland apple pie. Poppy always had the right recipe to glue things back together. He always wrapped things up very tightly at Christmas too. For all these memories that we treasure ...we are grateful. 🍎
